What are Aesthetics?

When looking for design inspiration online, whether it is fashion or interior decor, you’ve probably stumbled upon the words “aesthetic” or “...core” used to describe a particular look, but what does this mean and where does it come from? In this article we’ll cover the origin of these terms, their application, and how you can look to them for inspiration.

“...core” is defined by the Aesthetics Wiki as “implies a system, a set of rules” essentially the looks that follow a lifestyle. A popular example is cottagecore, which emphasizes living a harmonious life with nature, encouraging self sufficiency and the outdoors.

The word “Aesthetic” is defined as “concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty” by Oxford Languages. When applied to interior design or fashion, it addresses how elements like color, shape, size, and even nostalgia convey a certain statement about the person. For example, one type of aesthetic that has been popularized in younger crowds are the “academia” looks. This aesthetic takes inspiration from aristocratic European culture in the 19th century, romanticizing education so people who embrace this aesthetic tend to carry many books and dress more like 19th century European students. This is just one of many different types of aesthetics, one likely will resonate with you!
