Types of Home Foundations: Part One

When it comes to your home, making sure it is level and sturdy is one of the most important aspects in ensuring it stays around for a long time, and a foundation does just that! Home foundations literally serve as the ground where the rest of the home is then built on, that said, there are a wide variety of these foundations to look at and consider. In this first part, we’ll begin covering some of the primary types of home foundations!

Basement- these types are very common in cold regions such as the northeast as home foundations need to be built below frost lines anyway, and basement foundations do a great job shielding from the elements along with providing more living space. That said, these are also the most expensive type of foundation as it requires beams, walls, cement, essentially building a whole new room underground.

Wood- a quick and more economic method since wood foundations don’t require concrete or particularly labor intensive. The wood used is specially treated so it is resistant to decay and can be installed easier. These wood foundations can also be insulated to create a less drafty living space.
