Storm Surges, What Are They?

It’s June which means the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season is officially on us. That said, it’s important to stay informed on what could be brewing in your area and what exactly each situation means. In this article, we’ll discuss storm surges, what causes them, and what to expect.

Storm surges are found during hurricanes when there is an intense rise in sea level. For coastal places such as our home of Florida, this can be especially dangerous. Storm surges are caused by strong winds blowing the water in its direction with other factors such as atmospheric pressure heightening this effect by pushing the water further out from the eye of the storm.

When it comes to hurricanes, flooding is primarily responsible for the most deaths and economic damage so it is important to stay up to date if your area is at risk of a surge. When it comes to surges, depending on the severity, it is likely evacuation and taking shelter will be needed. If one is predicted in your area, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will have up to date data to assist your home and business.
