Hurricane Preparation: Sheltering your Home (Part One)

Hurricanes can be unpredictable, from size and scale, forecasting can always give us a good idea, but you never know until you know. Preparing your home for an impending hurricane and taking proactive steps can significantly mitigate potential damage and give peace of mind during turbulent times. In this first part, we will begin to discuss a few steps you can take with your home to prepare for the weather.

The first and often overlooked bit is to secure any potentially loose items outdoors. This can range from large items such as outdoor furniture and grills to considering giving your trees and shrubs a trim to prevent further debris. Similarly, it is important to check your roof for loose shingles or tiles that may fly away.

Outdoors as well, make sure you are clearing your gutters and drains to prevent water buildup and potential flooding. Other necessary steps include making sure your windows and doors are reinforced, using storm resistant bolts or bars if necessary. Staying up to date on current storms that may go through your area as well as having an evacuation plan are also necessary for comprehensive hurricane preparation!

We hope you found this first part about how to shelter your home during hurricanes to be helpful in getting you prepared this hurricane season!
