Every year, hurricane season begins on June 1st and extends into November 30th. Even though there are official dates set aside, all Floridians know that May is rainy season before the official start of the hurricane season. Sometimes there are storms during this time that act as a warm-up for the hurricanes and storms to come. This year’s forecast, while significantly less than 2020’s packed line-up, is still one to be on the look out for.
Last year, there were a grand total of 31 named storms. 13 of those became hurricanes, six of which became major hurricanes which is defined as being category three or higher. This year, prediction estimates range between about 16-20 named storms. About 7-10 are predicted to become hurricanes of which 3-5 will become category three or above.
While many of us are starting to enjoy the warmer weather, going out more, enjoying the water, it’s also a good idea to begin annual hurricane preparations. Preparing evacuation plans, getting the everyone and the pets vaccinated, and preparing disaster bags are musts.
